There are lots of myths and misconceptions about chiropractic care, so we thought we’d share some facts.
“Chiropractors are not real doctors”
Like GPs, physics, dentists and other mainstream healthcare providers, Australian Chiropractors receive the title ‘Dr’ through national registration with The Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and are subject to the same type of testing, licensing, and monitoring procedures as medical doctors.
“Chiropractors don’t have legitimate medical training or qualifications”
Chiropractors undergo five years of intense university study, including a double degree in Science and Clinical Chiropractic, over 1,600+ hours of clinical work, and treatment of hundreds of patients under the supervision of registered Chiropractic doctors..
The subjects in their degree are similar to a medical practitioner’s training, such as microbiology, parasitology, physiology, anatomy, neuroanatomy, diagnosis and management, pathology, orthopedics, neurology etc.
“There’s no evidence or proof that Chiropractic care really works.”
There are a variety of peer-reviewed studies published that provide evidence that Chiropractic care may be effective treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal pain, migraines and headaches.
In 2018 The Spine Journal published a review that included multiple studies over 17 years found that, for those experience chronic lower back pain, chiropractic treatments were viable options for pain management.
Similar studies published by the National Centre for Biotechnology (NCBI) all provided evidence for the benefits of chiropractic care for chronic whiplash syndrome, back-related leg pain, and chronic headaches and migraines.
“Chiropractors only crack backs”
While spinal adjustments (aka back cracks) can be a part of treatment, Chiropractors offer a wide range of options to suit your specific needs.
Treatments can include manual spinal adjustments, low-force (no cracking) spinal adjustments, massages, stretches, rehab exercises and more– your Chiropractor will always offer a complete and holistic treatment plan tailored to you.
Chiropractors can use different techniques depending on:
• The age of the patient. For example, Paediatrics adjustments are low force, gentle and no ‘cracking’
• Patient preference. Some patients prefer manual adjusting ‘cracking’ and some patients prefer more low-force techniques.
This is always something that is discussed between you and your Chiropractor to find the best technique for your body.
Presenting complaint. Depending on what is happening with your body some techniques work better than others.
Your Chiropractor may also use mobilisation and stretching, blocks, activator (a low force adjusting tool/no cracking), soft tissue/massage as well as prescribe stretches, rehabilitation and other lifestyle recommendations.
